Transforming 700 Years of Heritage
A Journey Through Time
The National Museum of Singapore’s Glass Rotunda has undergone a revolutionary transformation into “Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time,” setting new standards for heritage storytelling in the digital era. This ambitious redevelopment project, spanning from April 2024 to August 2025, represents a bold vision to bridge Singapore’s rich past with its dynamic future through immersive technology and interactive experiences — and the museum’s signature gift to Singapore in celebration of the nation’s 60th independence anniversary.
Launched on August 8, 2025, Singapore Odyssea is a 700-year immersive journey through Singapore’s rich history that seamlessly blends facts with captivating myths, centering on the island nation’s deep and enduring relationship with the sea.
The National Heritage Board faced a unique challenge: how to revitalise an existing gallery space to create deeper engagement with both local visitors and international tourists, while meeting the ambitious goal of creating Singapore’s signature SG60 commemorative experience. The new installation needed to span 700 years of Singapore’s history, presenting both historical facts and cultural myths in an engaging, immersive format.
The objective was multifaceted: create a compelling storytelling experience that would honour Singapore’s deep relationship with the sea, link the island nation’s past, present, and future, and provide visitors with a platform to reflect on how contemporary issues shape national identity and Singapore’s place in the world.
A multi-disciplinary approach ensuring seamless integration of creative vision with technical excellence.
At the heart of Singapore Odyssea lies a stunning 2.5-metre spherical LED globe featuring dynamic multimedia content that takes visitors through seven centuries of Singapore’s evolution. This technological marvel serves as both an artistic centrepiece and an educational time machine, displaying immersive visuals that transport visitors through different eras of Singapore’s maritime routes — from ancient trading posts to modern-day Singapore.
We implemented an innovative RFID wristband system that creates personalised magical wildlife companions inspired by Singapore’s rich biodiversity. This technology allows for customised content delivery based on visitor preferences, real-time engagement tracking, enhanced visitor flow management, and personalised takeaway experiences.
A striking 5-metre high ship installation at the gallery entrance immediately establishes the maritime heritage theme, creating a dramatic first impression that draws visitors into the experience. The installation centres on Singapore’s fundamental connection to the sea, tracing historical maritime trade routes, the evolution of Singapore’s ports, cultural exchanges through maritime connections, and the environmental and economic relationships with surrounding waters.
This complex project required collaboration with industry-leading specialists: GSM Projects (Creative Design and Direction) and Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd (Technical Implementation and Systems Integration). The multi-disciplinary approach ensured seamless integration of creative vision with technical excellence.
Singapore Odyssea represents more than just an installation replacement — it’s a paradigm shift in how cultural institutions can present national narratives. Launched as Singapore’s signature SG60 gift, the project successfully bridges 700 years of history while maintaining contemporary relevance and appeal. As a commemorative SG60 installation, it celebrates Singapore’s 60 years of independence, educates visitors about the nation’s 700-year heritage, strengthens national identity through shared historical understanding, and positions Singapore as a leader in heritage innovation.
The Singapore Odyssea project sets a new benchmark for heritage presentation in Southeast Asia. It demonstrates how traditional cultural institutions can embrace innovation while maintaining their core educational mission — successfully transitioning from beloved installations to even more ambitious experiences. As Singapore’s signature SG60 commemorative experience, it establishes a template for how nations can celebrate their heritage through cutting-edge technology.
